His mission is to provide listeners with a potent dose of SLAM 100.5FM. So far, fans of the progressive urban station have been pleased.Fast becoming a household name, DJ Travis, who has showcased his skills at various events in the past, says as his passion for music grows, his goal is to take his craft to a higher level.Did I mention that DJ Travis is only 15-years-old?
Good opportunity
Holding the record for being the youngest DJ on the local airwaves, the Pleasantville Secondary School student, who says he likes to play music and football in his spare time, says his love for music was born at a very young age. It was his natural talents on the "one's and two's" which earned him respect from the masses as well as the big man behind SLAM, Joel 'Signal To Noise' Morris."I always liked music. Since I was eight-years-old in primary school I wanted to get into this thing."
How did he get the chance to become a bona-fide DJ? "About two years ago, Signal invited me to play at a birthday party because I always told him that I could play. Everybody was amazed that I was so young but could play so good," he recalled."So, when I found out that he was opening the station, I approached him for a chance to be a part of it."Now that he's part of the SLAM team, DJ Travis says he's thankful for the opportunity to show what he's made of."I was excited when I got through. I don't really care about the times that I have to get up because any opportunity is a good opportunity," he said.
Number one priority
While his love for the entertainment industry is evident, the soon to be fifth former was quick to point out that school remains his number one priority-at least for now. Juggling the two, he stated, is "no big deal."He added: "My parents tell me that they don't mind that I'm doing this but to always remember that I have to put my school work first. I always make time for my school. I am performing well right now and I always try to do my best," he assured.
"At the end of the day, I want to get all my subjects."Noting that he would one day hope to become an engineer, DJ Travis said support from family and friends helps to keep him grounded. As for his popularity, he admits that he has grown "a lot" since his stint on radio. But, this self-professed "shy guy" isn't complaining."Yeah, I'm getting popular with the girls...but I feel normal about it," he said.
