Resh­ma Ra­goonath

A 31-year-old man found in­tox­i­cat­ed and wan­der­ing in Mara­bel­la dur­ing cur­few hours was yes­ter­day fined $1,500. Ted Pierre ap­peared be­fore San Fer­nan­do First Court mag­is­trate Ali­cia Chankar who, in pass­ing sen­tence, warned him to stay in­doors. She made Pierre re­peat the cur­few hours of 11 pm to 4 am and ad­vised him to obey it. Pierre was or­dered to pay $1,500 in 28 days or serve three months in jail with hard labour.

Pierre said he had been at a pub and was on his way to his moth­er's house in Mara­bel­la when po­lice of­fi­cers stopped him. Po­lice pros­e­cu­tor Sgt Gor­don Ma­haraj told the court at around 12.45 am yes­ter­day, Pierre was walk­ing along the South­ern Main Road, Mara­bel­la. WPC Samuel stopped him and asked if he had a per­mit or was ex­empt­ed from the cur­few. The of­fi­cer de­tect­ed the smell of al­co­hol on Pierre while she was speak­ing to him. Pierre was ar­rest­ed and tak­en to the Mara­bel­la Po­lice Sta­tion where he was charged.
