Nicholas McKenna is the 2011 winner of the fourth annual Tobago Teachers Talent Contest, held at the Signal Hill Secondary School on October 1. McKenna captured the first prize with his reggae ditty entitled Suzie.Representing Roxborough Secondary, McKenna portrayed a 13-year-old school girl. The Delaford-born Mathematics teacher highlighted some of the causes related to teenage pregnancy, including divorce and teacher abseentism, and called on better payment for teachers and improved curriculum to motivate students.
His performance was well received by the audience, who were clapping and cheering long after he left the stage.McKenna walked away with tickets for two to Miami and $6,000. He was voted the People's Choice. His fellow Roxborough teacher, Alicia Cortez, copped the second prize. Cortez rendered Time to Say Goodbye/Conte Partiro in Italian and won $4,500 for her efforts. Phillip Roachford of Scarborough Roman Catholic Primary placed third.Shurwayne Winchester, Black Stalin and Princess Adanna were the guest performers.
