Forward Duane Virgil, a former NCAA Division 1 player with Murray State University in the United States of America, was the leading scorer with 19 points as Maloney Pacers recorded a commanding 97-65 victory over Royal Extra Lions when action in the Super 10 Basketball League Pre-season continued on Saturday night.It was the second match of a double-header played at the Jean Pierre Complex, Mucurapo.The fixture followed a Petro Jazz 77-71 win over UTT.The Maloney Pacers surged in the final two quarters easing to the victory after being held at 41-41 the half.
Lions were behind by two points at the end of the first quarter, but had the better showing in the second, scoring 22 points to the Pacers' 20, to even the scores.Pacers dominated the Lions 24-9 in the third period, before outscoring its opponent 32-15 in the final stanza. centre Gimel Lewis, who plays professionally overseas netted 13 points, the second highest for the team.Lions' skipper centre Andrew Ifill scored 16 points.
Jazz hold-on to whip UTT
In the first match, despite the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) scoring an impressive 31 points to Petro Jazz's 14 in the final quarter, the team was unable to salvage a win. Petro Jazz came out winners by the six point margin in spite of UTT's attempt at a comeback.
Petro Jazz led by centre-forward Steve McSween, were up 22-15 at the first quarter. The team extended its lead to 45-30 and 63-40 in the second and third quarters, before UTT reduced the deficit in the final period.
McSween scored 16 points for the winning team, while Dexter Manswell assisted with 15 points.
Patrick Scipio scored a team-high 15 points for UTT, followed by Jeffrey Harris and Kerry Celestine with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
