Di­rec­tor of the Pub­lic Af­fairs Unit of the Po­lice Ser­vice, Sharon Lee As­sang, says a to­tal of 5,826 peo­ple have been ar­rest­ed since the state of emer­gency was de­clared on Au­gust 21.Lee As­sang was speak­ing at yes­ter­day's dai­ly news con­fer­ence at the Po­lice Ad­min­is­tra­tion Build­ing, Port-of-Spain.She said there were 463 gang-re­lat­ed ar­rests with 1,405 peo­ple be­ing de­tained on out­stand­ing war­rants.

Some 12,739 rounds of am­mu­ni­tion, 34 mag­a­zines and 154 firearms were seized.She said 484 peo­ple were ar­rest­ed for breach­ing the cur­few; 833 for oth­er of­fences and 1,024 on drug of­fences.Al­so, at the con­fer­ence Lee As­sang com­mend­ed WPC Tho­ra Is­abel Shep­pard on her re­ceiv­ing the In­ter­na­tion­al As­so­ci­a­tion of Women Po­lice Com­mu­ni­ty Ser­vice Award 2011.

Shep­pard joined the Spe­cial Re­serve Po­lice (SRP) in 1989 and was as­signed to the Com­mu­ni­ty Re­la­tions De­part­ment at the Point Fortin Po­lice Sta­tion.She won the award for Com­mu­ni­ty Ser­vice from the Point Fortin Bor­ough Cor­po­ra­tion and the Point Fortin Cham­ber of Com­merce.
