Too Many Questions for the Maiden Stakes over a mile of Wolverhampton polytrack today. The answer is obvious! This twice-raced, David Evans-trained gelding improved for debut experience, when third to Mi Regalo over six at Kempton last month, staying on strongly in the closing stages, in a manner that suggests a return to this trip will be ideal.
Cathy Gannon was replaced by Dane O'Neill last time out but the Irish dynamo is back this time and unless there's a mystery amongst four newcomers, Too Many Questions should make it third time lucky.Definitely worth a punt and so is Unbreak My Heart in the four-runner Selling Stakes over an extended mile, nigh on a cert.
Selling races are difficult to win, often much tougher than handicaps, due to the presence of useful veterans and badly-handicapped thoroughbreds. The old theory that sellers represent a drop in grade doesn't wash anymore. This first came to mind when looking at the entry book for my own horse, Elton Ledger, back in the nineties.
In fact, on one occasion we deliberately dropped into a seller prior to running in a handicap. The fact Elton was beaten in the so-called lowest grade was not lost on the subsequent form-analysers and the old boy was a tremendous price next time out, in a fiercely-competitive handicap.Needless to say, Jason Weaver was able to steer Elton Ledger home, in a course record time.
In racing, you need to be one step ahead or know something that no one else knows!Unbreak My Heart shouldn't be pressed and could be a decent purchase for a would-be owner. Perhaps he can win a handicap next time out, if trainer Richard Fahey's owner wants to let this six-year-old go.It's a major decision because I'm totally convinced, this particular age is the zenith of maturity. I've proved that, many times.
