Kishanda and Hayley Turner look an invincible combination for the four-runner Maiden Stakes over a mile of Southwell fibresand today; that was my first impression. After more careful scrutiny Kishanda is even more the proverbial 'good thing' and totally unopposable. 'Daily Earner' was aboard Hugh Morrison-trained Sleeping Indian filly when she made an auspicious course and distance debut three weeks ago. Kishanda, though no match for easy winner, Son Jisa, shaped well in the closing stages to beat odds-on favourite for the second spot. Morrison has a happy knack of improving thoroughbreds, has a good record at this particular Nottinghamshire venue and Hayley knows it better than any jockey alive, having been born there. We have a bet and with Mark Johnston having a runner, New Latin, placed three times, odds-against is anticipated. Just off to the bank!
Earlier, for the fifth time in succession, Hayley rides Camps Bay in the Selling stakes over twelve furlongs. It's 'time' this Conor Dore-trained, course and distance visited the winners' enclosure, again.
That seemed certain last month, when Camps Bay galloped into the lead on Lingfield polytrack, seemingly full of running; 300 yards from home there was no betting in a two-miler but then stamina gave out and for the third successive occasion this consistent seven-year-old was placed second.
Doubtless on advice from Hayley, a reversion to this shorter trip was advised. Dore appears to have found the definitive opportunity because the TH has him clear 'best-in' and Camps Bay must be backed accordingly. Course and distance winners have to be respected on this unique surface. So many thoroughbreds are just unable to cope with the 'deep stuff' and Bonnie Prince Blue is another case in point. This ex-Barry Hills-trained veteran won by seven lengths over six furlongs four weeks ago and something similar can be anticipated in the Claiming Stakes over six furlongs.
