Foreign Minister Dr Surujrattan Rambachan says T&T was happy about the resignation of Egyptian President Honsi Mubarak. He said that was a clear indication that "some sort of resolution" of the crisis in Egypt was likely in the shortest possible time. He was commenting on the resignation of Egyptian President Honsi Mubarak after more than two weeks of sustained public protests demanding his removal.
In an interview yesterday, Rambachan said the Government and people of T&T had two wishes: That democracy would return and there would be free and fair elections so the will of the people in Egypt would prevail. Dr Rambachan said the protests in Egypt were the longest in recent times. He said it was a strong display "of the people of Egypt rallying for what they believed was a just cause."
Dr Rambachan added that the protests were conducted "in a rather peaceful manner , which was a tribute to the people (of Egypt) themselves. He added: "So now we hope for a full return to democracy in Egypt. That region needs stability and the stability of the world depends on the stability of that region also." Rambachan called on the new leaders in Egypt and the rest of the international community "to do all they can to ensure that they influence and direct a transition that is peaceful and stable."
