The Amateur Swimming Association of T&T has applauded Christian Homer and Cherelle Thompson on their achievement in capturing the 2010 First Citizens Sports Foundation Junior Sportsman and Junior Sportswoman of the Year.The athletes were bestowed the honour at the annual awards function which was held at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), Port-of-Spain, on Wednesday night.
In a release from Public Relations Officer, Jason Wickham, ASATT stated it was also proud of Cadell Lyons and former award winner George Bovell III who were named in the top ten athletes in the Junior and Senior Categories respectively."Our swimmers have continued to swim valiantly for the red, white and black, training hard day in and day out for the hope of Olympic glory," the release stated.
Homer had a fantastic year in which he won this country's first Youth Olympic gold medal in Singapore.He was also a finalist at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, a semi-finalist at the Commonwealth Games, a multiple regional medallist winning a total of ten individual medals at the Carifta and Caribbean Islands Swimming Championship, establishing two Carifta records and one national record.
Thompson enjoyed an impressive 2010 season, reaching the finals at CAC Games and semi-finals at the Commonwealth Games in India.She also established two new national records in 2010, and was the only T&T Junior to qualify for the World Short Course Championships in Dubai.Thompson won a total of six individual medals at the Carifta and Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships.
The release continued, "We are indeed proud of our swimmers and all our athletes who continue to bring glory to our swimming fraternity and the country as a whole. The performances of this quartet are outstanding, they are deserving of all accolades bestowed upon them. Our Association is committed to development of all our athletes to reach the elite level, and contribute to T&T's medal haul at the 2012 London Olympics."The local swimming association also expressed its thanks to the Sports Foundation for the confidence they have reposed in our athletes by their selections while it extended congratulations to all other winners and nominees.
