The Synergy Soca Star competition is like a school.These were the words expressed by chief executive officer of Synergy Peter C Lewis following the triumph of competitor Kamaul Franklyn (Rastar) at Thursday night's final of the Synergy Soca Star competition held at the Jean Pierre Complex, Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain.Lewis said Franklyn learnt well and was at the top of the class.
The bmobile sponsored event, which saw the Jean Pierre Sports Complex packed with patrons-the majority of whom were teenagers-featured performances by Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez, Ian Alvarez (Bunji Garlin), Machel Montano, Kees Dieffenthaller, Iwer George and Bajan soca artiste Lil Rick who each teamed up with a competitor for the first round of the competition.
The six finalists were chosen from a total of 270 entrants and represented the best of T&Ts young soca talent.Franklyn said he was overwhelmed and joyful over his victory. He said he appreciated Synergy TV for its training.Franklyn, who won a vehicle from Toyota as part of his first prize, said the car was a family vehicle which would be a gift to his mother.In second and third places of the competition were Christopher Hinkson (ChriStar) and Kibwee Prescott respectively.
Other finalists were Summer Fraser, Osei James (Noble Vox) and Akeem Chance (Preedy).Judge of the competition, Paul Richards, said the competition had a higher level of talent every year."Every year the standard raises, whether it's their demos, voices or training, the calibre of competitions is higher each year," said Richards.Past soca stars included HD band member Umi Marcano and this year's Soca Monarch finalist Megan Waldron.
