On March 20, four people died on the Uriah Butler Highway. Their deaths were preventable and the Government bears direct responsibility. Their car went out of control and crossed into the path of a tanker travelling in the opposite direction. North and south traffic are only separated by a shallow ditch that is totally ineffective in stopping fast-moving vehicles.
What is needed is a crash barrier, as used all over the world, next to the outer lane so that if a vehicle gets out of control and moves to the right off the tarmac it is either deflected back or slows down due to losing energy by friction against the barrier. Since these highways were built there must have been many, many deaths from head-on collisions due to the lack of these barriers. Come on, Madam Prime Minister, install barriers as a matter of urgency and save lives.
