Ruth Hamlet, a 21-year-old shopowner of Tobago, has been stabbed to death by a female relative who remained in police custody last night. Police said they were told Hamlet and her common-law husband were near her shop at their home, when an elder relative and her (the relative's) boyfriend began throwing stones at the shop.
Detectives said Hamlet pleaded with the relative to stop throwing stones. However, Hamlet was attacked with a cutlass. A struggle ensued between Hamlet and the relative during which the cutlass fell. The relative then reportedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Hamlet about the body. Hamlet ran but collapsed a short distance away. She was rushed to the Scarborough Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
