The Christmas holidays were coming and that did not help Regney's dark mood. One day, Regney sat down and wrote a poem about the first Christmas. When he finished, he gave the poem to his wife and asked her to write music for his poem. Regney thought the melody his wife wrote was one of the most beautiful he had ever heard, but the melody didn't quite fit the song. He had written, "Said the wind to the little lamb" but his wife had added an extra musical note. That line became "Said the night wind to the little lamb." Shayne did not think Americans would understand the line about the star "with a tail as big as a kite" so she asked her husband to make a change. Regney refused to change that line and it became one of the most endearing lines in a Christmas carol. As you can see, each Christmas song has its own story and that story, it turns out, is just as magical as the holiday itself.
