The trio of Jabarai Baptiste, Vrisnelit Faure and Luke Gillette were among the records when the Amateur Swimming Association of T&T December Invitational Meet ended at the Marlins Swimming Pool, Morne Coco Road, Westmooring on Sunday night. Hosts club, Marlins also made a successful title defence after four days of gruelling competition, with 1,148.50 points.
Macoya based clubs Tidal Wave Aquatics (644) and Centre of Excellence Sea Hawks (598) were second and third respectively. Top 11-12 male Jabari Baptiste led the charge for his Marlins club capturing two national records on the final night. Baptiste erased two Nicholas Bovell records in the 200m Individual Medley and the 100m backstroke. In the 200m IM, Baptiste stopped the clock on 2:19.02, to erasing the Bovell mark of 2:19.29 while the 100m backstroke record of 1:05.25 was surpassed by Baptiste with a time of 1:05.05. Baptiste won the 100m breaststroke in 1:16.68.
Faure of Tidal Wave Aquatics established a new Eight & Under girls' national record in the 50m breaststroke. Faure, who won the gold in the event on Saturday in 43.84 seconds, just outside the 1994 Sobenna George record of 43.42. Not content with the near miss, Faure did a time trial on Sunday. In her race against the clock, Faure touched the wall in 42.85. Gillette of Marlins achieved his second record for the meet in the 200m Individual Medley, when he erased the 1987 Eight & Under boys' record of Kevin Salandy (3:02.24) with a 2:57.27 clocking.
Brienne Renfurm of Suriname's De Dolfjin won three gold medals on the final day of competition.
Renfurm won the 100m backstroke (1:17.73), 50m freestyle (29.34) and the 100m breaststroke (1:26.21). Siona Huxley of Sharks St Lucia won the 100m backstroke (1:09.33) and 50m freestyle (28.70).
Other winners in the 200 IM were Arielle Downes (2:55.81) of Torpedoes, Osaze Riley (2:53.44) of Tsunami, Syriah David (2:39.45) of Tidal Wave, Sangeeta Maharaj (2:38.97) of Stingray, Jonathan Gillette (2:20.13) and Jonathan Cabral (2:20.36) of Marlins, and Kimberly Joseph (2:50.04) of UTT.
In the 100m backstroke, Kristin Julien (1:11.88) of Tsunami, Dylan Carter (1:00.52) and Christian Homer (1:01.95) of Marlins were the victors. Tidal Wave's Vrisnelit Faure (34.22), Joshua Romany (24.16), Luke Gillette (33.10) and James Gillette (29.60) of Marlins, Tsunami's Amira Pilgrim (30.39), Christian Selby (26.97) of Pirates Barbados, Chadae Thompson (28.68) of Eagles, and Strasser Sankar (24.07) of UTT topped the other 50m freestyle events.
The 100m breaststroke saw wins by Jessica Stephenson (1:17.13) of Marlins, Tidal Wave's Jeron O'Brien (1:11.17), Rejan Chin (1:21.69) of Blue Dolphins and Napoleon Howell (1:06.82) of Sea Hawks.
In the 200m freestyle relay events, Marlins Swim Club won the Eight & Under, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17 boys' and the 15-17 girls' relays.
Tsunami won the 9-10 boys'; Sea Hawks, the 13-14 girls' and Blue Dolphins, the 9-10 boys'.
The next ASATT event was a time trial yesterday and next week Wednesday aimed at swimmers close to achieving national records.
