Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has placed her ministers on high alert, advising them to take advantage of the dry season, which is due to start next month, and deliver on promised projects. So said Local Government Minister Chandresh Sharma while speaking with reporters, after a Hindu "Guru Diksha" function held for his children at the Divali Nagar site in Chaguanas yesterday. Sharma said Persad-Bissessar met with the Cabinet last week and urged them to make good on their promises.
He explained that his 2011 priority was to work with all 14 regional corporations to deliver better roads, more water and better drainage in T&T.
"The Prime Minister told us that we are now six months into Government and while service is important, we have to deliver," Sharma said. He explained that all ministries were prepared to get into full gear next year to complete scheduled projects. "One of our major goals is to reduce cost overruns, time overruns and wastage of public funds which is what existed in the past," he said. "We are all anxious to start work. We want to deliver quality projects in record time. We have to also make sure that we do whatever it takes to be responsible in terms of time and money," Sharma said.
He also explained that Government will also embark on a full recycling programme which was part of the election promise. "There will be heavy focus on making water available to the people of T&T... We will ensure that everyone benefits, regardless of where they live," Sharma said. He also said the Government would also continue to protect the environment in the discharge of its duties.
