Every weekday from about 5.30 am the shoulder of the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway between Curepe and the Uriah Butler intersection becomes a lane for inconsiderate drivers. I have not seen a policeman giving a ticket for this offence for the last three years but on Saturday morning there were two policemen on motorbikes accompanying a number of cyclists along Wrightson Road and blocking traffic in both lanes, ie, effectively blocking the entire road to east-bound traffic.
This nonsense occurs every Saturday morning but yet we cannot get policemen to enforce traffic laws. It is not necessary to have a policeman on the highway every day. If they appear on random days once or twice a week the driving on the shoulder nonsense will cease and the money earned ($2,000 a ticket) can pay their salaries. It is interesting to note that the new Commissioner of Police comes from a country where traffic laws are strictly enforced but he has been unable to improve the situation here.
