Amateur golfers and golf enthusiasts came out in their numbers at the St Andrew's Golf Course in Moka, Maraval on Sunday to support this year's Prime Minister's Charity Golf Classic. The Classic which is in it's 13 year was held under the theme PAR for the cause: Playing for Autism Research.
Topping the competition this time around was the AGB Advertising team of Andy Gomez-Burke and Desmond Ambrose. Playing under the two ball better ball system, Gomez-Burke and Ambrose had a score of 47, beating a field which featured 58 sponsored teams with 116 players, to win the event. The pair walked away with two remote control golf caddies valued at $4,000 each.
Gomez-Burke and Ambrose also received a challenge trophy and two replicas along with other prizes presented by Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, Gary Hunt, on behalf of the tournament patron Prime Minister Patrick Manning at the awards function held at the Moka Club House. Their total at the end of play in 18 hole tournament was one point more than runners-up Lennox Nimchand and Michael Dindial who were sponsored by Toyota. Third place went to Baptist Health's Amir Ali and Dr Arvind Ali.
This year, the organisers of the tournament partnered with the Autistic Society of T&T and will be donating a large amount of the proceeds from the event to the group, to further their work with young autistic people. Funds will be used for ongoing therapy such as swimming and music in addition to educational programmes. Since its inception, the Classic has donated close to $3M to charitable cases throughout T&T. Last year's tournament raised almost $300,000, all of which went directly to charity cases.
Chairperson of the Charity Classic, Vashti Phekoo also revealed that the organisation will also use some of the funds to aid children suffering with Cerebral Palsy. The sponsors of this year's tournament included TSTT, bmobile, Super Industrial Services Ltd Genivar, Desalination Company of T&T, Pernod Ricard USA, Petro Canada Petrotrin, National Energy Corporation of T&T and Solid Waste Management Company Ltd.
