Am­a­teur golfers and golf en­thu­si­asts came out in their num­bers at the St An­drew's Golf Course in Mo­ka, Mar­aval on Sun­day to sup­port this year's Prime Min­is­ter's Char­i­ty Golf Clas­sic. The Clas­sic which is in it's 13 year was held un­der the theme PAR for the cause: Play­ing for Autism Re­search.

Top­ping the com­pe­ti­tion this time around was the AGB Ad­ver­tis­ing team of Andy Gomez-Burke and Desmond Am­brose. Play­ing un­der the two ball bet­ter ball sys­tem, Gomez-Burke and Am­brose had a score of 47, beat­ing a field which fea­tured 58 spon­sored teams with 116 play­ers, to win the event. The pair walked away with two re­mote con­trol golf cad­dies val­ued at $4,000 each.

Gomez-Burke and Am­brose al­so re­ceived a chal­lenge tro­phy and two repli­cas along with oth­er prizes pre­sent­ed by Min­is­ter of Sport and Youth Af­fairs, Gary Hunt, on be­half of the tour­na­ment pa­tron Prime Min­is­ter Patrick Man­ning at the awards func­tion held at the Mo­ka Club House. Their to­tal at the end of play in 18 hole tour­na­ment was one point more than run­ners-up Lennox Nim­c­hand and Michael Din­di­al who were spon­sored by Toy­ota. Third place went to Bap­tist Health's Amir Ali and Dr Arvind Ali.

This year, the or­gan­is­ers of the tour­na­ment part­nered with the Autis­tic So­ci­ety of T&T and will be do­nat­ing a large amount of the pro­ceeds from the event to the group, to fur­ther their work with young autis­tic peo­ple. Funds will be used for on­go­ing ther­a­py such as swim­ming and mu­sic in ad­di­tion to ed­u­ca­tion­al pro­grammes. Since its in­cep­tion, the Clas­sic has do­nat­ed close to $3M to char­i­ta­ble cas­es through­out T&T. Last year's tour­na­ment raised al­most $300,000, all of which went di­rect­ly to char­i­ty cas­es.

Chair­per­son of the Char­i­ty Clas­sic, Vashti Phekoo al­so re­vealed that the or­gan­i­sa­tion will al­so use some of the funds to aid chil­dren suf­fer­ing with Cere­bral Pal­sy. The spon­sors of this year's tour­na­ment in­clud­ed TSTT, bmo­bile, Su­per In­dus­tri­al Ser­vices Ltd Geni­var, De­sali­na­tion Com­pa­ny of T&T, Pern­od Ri­card USA, Petro Cana­da Petrotrin, Na­tion­al En­er­gy Cor­po­ra­tion of T&T and Sol­id Waste Man­age­ment Com­pa­ny Ltd.
