Even after 38 years in the business, DJ Nyabinghi still has what it takes to move people's feet. The veteran disc jockey celebrated his birthday bash last Saturday, doing what he does best, playing music at a party. The car park behind Club Gravity, Long Circular Road, St James, was the location. Known for his roots-reggae style of music at parties, the proud Rastafarian attributed his longevity and popularity over the years to his religious beliefs. Although Nyabinghi is more often seen on the microphone than on the turntables, his ability to draw a crowd is still evident at his parties.
He said, "Rastafari is my life and we need unification." He took the opportunity to state that, "the Gully and Gaza thing cyah work." Gully and Gaza are two ghetto areas in Jamaica, known for their gang violence. The?places are also a main subject in many reggae songs emerging from Jamaican singers, the main two being Movado and Vybz Kartel.?Movado has also been in a long standing feud with dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel, a rivalry that has spilled over to their respective groups, The Alliance and the Portmore Empire, respectively. In recent times, many incidences of local school violence has been blamed on the music emanating from Movado and Vybz Kartel.
