Florida State University senior, Pilar McShine won the women's mile at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Blacksburg Virginia on Saturday. The former Success/Laventille student completed the race in four minutes, 44.62 seconds to edge her teammate Amanda Winslow (4.49.95). Third was NC State's Emily Pritt in 4.47.16. McShine's performance was matched by countrywoman, the University of Wyoming's Afiya Walker, who won the women's 400m at the Mountain West Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Walker clocked 53.40 seconds to outrun Texas Christian University's Kristal Juarez (53.43) and San Diego State's Nicole Stone (53.69) for the title.
She also ran the anchor leg in her school's fifth place finish in the women's 4 x 400m. The Wyoming quartet, which also included Taylor Gardner, Erica Anderson and Jennifer Schmitz, finished in 3.50.08. At the Big-12 Indoor Championships at Iowa State University, Baylor University freshman Gavyn Nero, also from T&T, followed his record setting run in the men's distance medley with a silver medal performance in the Men's 800m. Nero crossed the line in 1.50.17 after his schoolmate James Gilreath (1.49.17) had secured the gold. Nero's countryman, Zwede Hewitt also distinguished himself for Baylor, running the third leg in his school's second place finish in the men's 4x400m relay. Hewitt and his partners Michael Higgins, Trey Harts and Marcus Boyd clocked three minutes, 5.37 seconds to place behind Texas A&M (3.04.99). He missed out on another medal when he came in fourth in the men's 600 yard run in 10.10.15.
University of Minessota freshman, T&T's Alena Brooks won a women's 600m silver medal during the Big-Ten Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships in Pennsylvania. Brooks ran a time of 1.29.26 after winner Molly Breckwith of the University of Indiana finished in 1.27.22. She won another silver when her team, including Elizabeth Yetzer, Chioma Omeoga and Nikki Swenson, clocked 11.23.88 in the Women's Distance Medley. The University of Michigan won the race in 11.21.55. Brooks's schoolmate Nyoka Giles was also in competition, finishing ninth in the women's 60m in 7.55 and 15th in the women's 200m in 24.55. Brothers Robert and Richard Collingwood, both freshmen at Southern Mississippi, placed eighth and 15th receptively in the men's shot put at the Conference USA Indoor Championships in Houston, Texas. Robert recorded a throw of 15.71m while Richard managed 14.65m.
