Two po­lice of­fi­cers from North­ern Di­vi­sion have come in for high praise from act­ing Se­nior Supt Stephen Ram­sub­hag af­ter one of them was al­most killed by a knife-wield­ing crim­i­nal.

Ac­cord­ing to re­ports, just af­ter mid­night on Wednes­day, PCs Collin Williams and Chad Bur­shell, of the Tu­na­puna CID, were con­duct­ing sur­veil­lance du­ty at Jack­son Street, Curepe. Bur­shell had al­ready ex­it­ed an un­marked po­lice ve­hi­cle and was stand­ing a short dis­tance away.

As Williams was about to come out of the car, a man walked up to him, placed a knife to his throat and de­mand­ed the keys. The of­fi­cer, how­ev­er, wres­tled the man to the ground and man­aged to take away the knife. Dur­ing the melee Williams was stabbed in the chest.

Po­lice said the 32-year-old sus­pect is ex­pect­ed to be placed on iden­ti­fi­ca­tion pa­rade in con­nec­tion with sev­er­al rob­beries. Al­so com­ing in for praise for his ef­fec­tive­ness was Can­non George Archer. Archer, is one of the coun­sel­lors as­signed to the Vic­tims Sup­port Unit of the Po­lice Ser­vice. Ram­sub­hag said al­most im­me­di­ate­ly af­ter the mur­der of PC El­ton John on Sat­ur­day, Archer con­tact­ed John's fam­i­ly, of­fer­ing his con­do­lences and coun­selling.
