Two police officers from Northern Division have come in for high praise from acting Senior Supt Stephen Ramsubhag after one of them was almost killed by a knife-wielding criminal.
According to reports, just after midnight on Wednesday, PCs Collin Williams and Chad Burshell, of the Tunapuna CID, were conducting surveillance duty at Jackson Street, Curepe. Burshell had already exited an unmarked police vehicle and was standing a short distance away.
As Williams was about to come out of the car, a man walked up to him, placed a knife to his throat and demanded the keys. The officer, however, wrestled the man to the ground and managed to take away the knife. During the melee Williams was stabbed in the chest.
Police said the 32-year-old suspect is expected to be placed on identification parade in connection with several robberies. Also coming in for praise for his effectiveness was Cannon George Archer. Archer, is one of the counsellors assigned to the Victims Support Unit of the Police Service. Ramsubhag said almost immediately after the murder of PC Elton John on Saturday, Archer contacted John's family, offering his condolences and counselling.
