The People's National Movement (PNM) and the United National Congress (UNC) have each secured one seat in the upcoming July 26 local government election. Two candidates have won their seats as declared by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) yesterday.
Katty Ann Christopher, the People's National Movement (PNM) candidate for Covigne/Rich P lain and Anil Balliram, the United National Congress (UNC) candidate for Freeport/Calcutta were declared elected by the returning officer for their districts since the other candidates contesting those seats failed to complete the nomination process. Nomination Day was on Monday.
The PNM is contesting 133 seats, the UNC 83 and the Congress of the People (COP) 57. The EBC said it received 282 valid nominations for the 134 electoral districts. The release said the COP candidate for Covigne/Rich Plain, who was unidentified, presented the nomination paper before the required time but one of the statutory declarations was not signed.
"The candidate left to have the matter corrected but did not return in time," the EBC stated. Balliram automatically won his seat because the other candidate's nomination papers were declared invalid since he did not have the required number of proposers.
