Team captain, Nolan Tash registerd a team-high 19 points as this country's men's volleyball team won their second straight match at the 13th Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Assocaition Championship at the Ismay Sports Hall, Paramaribo, Suriname, yesterday. The Calypso Spikers won in five sets, 25-18, 25-18, 27-29, 23-25, 15-9 over Guadeloupe to improve to a record of 2-0 in Pool B and maximum four points. After a winning the first two set convincingly and leading the third, 19-16 T&T coach Gideon Dickson decided to experiment with his roster and opted to give his bench players some time on the court.
However, this move backfired as Guadeloupe took full advantage of the chance gifted and won the third set, 27-29 and also won the fourth set, 23-25 to set up a fifth and deciding set where T&T bounced back and won 15-9 to clinch a quarterfinal spot at least. Tash ended with 19 points and fellow spiker Jessel Davis added 15 for T&T who will meet the Bajans tomorrow from 6 pm. Missing from the T&T line-up was Sean Morrison due to food poisoning
On Monday night, Suriname women's team also improved to maximum four points in Pool A after beating Netherlands Antilles 30-28, 25-22, 25-23.
Jamaica women swept Dominica 25-15, 25-12, 25-14 in Pool A and ten-time champions, Barbados won their first match against Bahamas 25-18, 25-14, 25-14 in Pool B. In the lone men's match on Monday, Bahamas eased past Jamaica in Group A, 25-21, 25-17, 25-21. Today, the T&T women, two-time defending champions and three-time champions overall meet Bahamas from 6 pm in their second match having defeated the US Virgin Islands in their Pool B opener on Sunday.
