Heavyweight boxer Tariq Abdul Haqq is set to win Trinidad and Tobago's fifth medal as he advanced to the semifinals of the men's superheavyweight competition at the 19th Commonwealth Games in India yesterday. On day seven, the CAC Games bronze medallist got the better of Joseph Parker of New Zealand in the quarternfinals. Abdul Haqq was tied with Parker 7:7 but got the nod on the tie-breaker. By making into the final four, he is guranteed at least a bronze medal. He will face Cameroon's Blaise Yepmour today. Former world jump champion Rhonda Watkins was edged out of a medal in the women's long jump. Watkins was fourth with a best leap of 6.36 metres, well below her qualification mark of 6.56 established on Saturday.
The distance was further than Canada's Alice Falaiye's 6.50 gold medal effort. Watkins got off to a bad start with two foul jumps. She then leaped to 6.36 in the third round to make it into the top eight to ensure three more attempts. However, she did not improve, hitting the sand pit at 6.35 on her last effort. Ayanna Alexander, the triple jump silver medallist was 11th with 5.87 meters. Falaiye achieved her winning jump in the last round after home-town girl Prajusha Maliakkal held the lead from the first round. The 23-year-old Indian improved in each round to finish at 6.47 metres. In third place was Falaiye's team-mae Tabia Charles with a 6.44 leap.
Emmanuel Callendar was seventh in the men's 200m finals. He clocked 21.12 seconds to finish well behind Leon Baptiste of England who won in 20.43 seconds, Jamaica's Lanford Spencer (20.49 secs) and Christian Malcolm of Wales (20.52). Callendar started strongly in lane two, but was behind coming into the straight and could not catch the leaders. Callendar was fourth in the semis in 21.05 seconds and advanced as one of the fastest losers. Aleesh Barber qualified for the finals of the women's 100m hurdles. She was second in heat two in 13.35 seconds finishing behind Angela White of Canada. Barber will contest the finals today. TT's women's netballers gave their best performance of the tournament when they went down to Australia 62 - 34.
The Calypso girls played with more determination which was lacking in previous games. The local girls were hoping to give coach Bridget Adams a win for her birthday which she celebrated yesterday. Earlier in the day, Allen was 15th in the men's 25 metre centre fire pistol finals with 264 points. His fellow bronze medallist Roger Daniel was three places behind in 18th with 258 points.
