The police are on the lookout for three suspects believed to be seriously injured after a shoot-out with police yesterday morning in Chaguanas.
In the shooting, a known member of a Central gang was shot and killed by the police during a robbery at Seecharan Used Cars, located just north of the Munroe Road flyover on the southbound lane of the Uriah Butler Highway.He has been identified as Sunra Dreskell, of Couva, who was used as a driver in a getaway car.
A report said around 2.45 am, four bandits entered the shop and assaulted and tied up a security guard who was on duty.An alarm was raised and the police raided the venue but the bandits managed to escape.However, a high-speed chase ensued and the bandits' vehicle ran into a ditch and there was an exchange of gunfire.
Dreskell was killed while his three accomplices crossed the highway and escaped in bushes.In a brief telephone interview yesterday, Jagdeo Seecharan, owner of Used Cars, said he was fed up with the crime situation. Last year, his business was firebombed.
"I am so disgusted about the entire crime situation in this country and I feel the bandits should be put in their place. It have honest hard-working citizens in this country and they (robbers) taking what we working for. Things already hard in the country," he added.
Seecharan said he was fortunate with the police response. However, a white Nissan Sentra motor car was missing.
"We want to believe it is someone resembling a former worker," he added.He said the security guard who was staked out in a vehicle was pulled out of the car at gunpoint.
"He was put to kneel down behind the van and they hit him some gun butts and he lost some teeth. They real beat him up and put him in a room," he said.
Jagdeo said the thieves then sprayed liquid in the security guard's eyes.He said another security guard who was on duty in an upper room saw the commotion and notified the police.
"I am thankful to the police for the quick response as the men were still there," he added.
Investigations are continuing.
