Speeding is a tool. The problem is reckless driving. Therefore criminalizing speeding is just government's way for deflecting from their impotence to detect and arrest reckless drivers. what is reckless driving? It is cutting in front of vehicles without signaling or giving drivers time to react to overtaking. reckless driving is using the shoulder as a designated highway lane.
Reckless driving is following ahead vehicle (bumper to bumper) less than a full 4 to 6 meter distance between vehicles. Reckless driving is suddenly breaking speed from high to slow acceleration when there is no emergency or ahead obstacle. Reckless driving is suddenly changing lanes without signaling. It is breaking red lights. It is failing to give way to pedestrians.
These acts deserve fines not focused high velocity driving. I believe the motivation behind Minister of Works and Transport Fitzgerald Hinds brain child being hiking the speeding fine is merely a revenue raising measure, which entraps everyone, thus making everyone a potential criminal. This way police may use enforcing of stupid law as an excuse to evade going after real criminals.
Hike in speeding fines is just to raise money for government to siphon to their party financiers. Speed is not the problem. Reckless driving is the problem. Fines for speeding just deflects from the government's impotence to arrest and fine reckless drivers.
