For the first time, the T&T Guardian will be donating the proceeds from the sale of the newspaper to a charity.
On Cancer Awareness Day tomorrow, Guardian Media will donate the $2 cover price for every newspaper sold to the T&T Cancer Society.
Speaking about the initiative yesterday, Guardian Media managing director Lucio Mesquita said: "Virtually everyone will know a relative or friend who has battled cancer or is battling cancer. And some of us will be going through treatment ourselves.
"Thanks to improved early diagnosis and treatment, more and more people are coming through the illness but we also know many others aren't as fortunate."
The T&T Guardian will also be adding the pink ribbon to its masthead this week to highlight the cause of cancer awareness.
Tomorrow will also see the launch of the T&T Guardian's new health supplement, Guardian Health and Wellness.
The 16 pages of tomorrow's first edition will focus exclusively on cancer and features the story of musician Roy Cape's cancer fight. Cape was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014 but is now in remission after chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
In the interview, the veteran bandleader urged men to get tested regularly.
"This is tragic and so avoidable, if only we had more awareness and better education about screening. I think too many people are not aware of what a huge risk prostate cancer is in our society and how much of a threat it is to our male population," Cape said.
In Caribbean men, the majority of cancer deaths are due to prostate cancer, followed by lung, stomach and colorectal cancers; and in women, breast cancer, followed by stomach, lung, cervical and colorectal cancers.
Across the Guardian Media group, there will also be special coverage on CNC3, the TBC radio network and Guardian Digital to mark this week of cancer awareness month.
"We will be covering the challenges we face in T&T, the many positive stories of those who have managed to beat the illness and we will be highlighting also those people and organisations who campaign hard to raise funds, research, promote better lifestyle choices and early diagnosis to help save more and more lives," Mesquita said.
Tomorrow's newspaper will also profile the T&T Cancer Society and reveal the challenges the organisation faces in its mission.
