North Eastern Division Task Force officers believe they have foiled a drug smuggling ring involving police officers, after they seized a stolen car with $1 million worth of drugs in it.Acting on a tip-off, NEDTF officers discovered 55 kilogrammes of marijuana in a car on Tuesday afternoon at the Stolen Vehicles compound at Sea Lots, Port-of-Spain.According to police reports, around 5.30 pm the car, a gold Honda Civic, was taken to the police compound from the Western Division.
NEDTF officers, led by Insp Roger Alexander and Cpl Sunil Bharath, went to the compound where the drugs were found in the trunk of the car.Police believe the drugs were being transported to the Sea Lots area under the pretence of it being a stolen vehicle which was to be lodged at the facility. The officers said they believe officers attached to the Stolen Vehicles Unit were part of the ploy to smuggle the drugs undetected.Cpl Bharath is spearheading investigations.
In an unrelated incident, officers of the Central Division arrested four men on Tuesday, minutes after they held up a Cunupia family and robbed them.According to police, Selvon Ramkissoon, 45, was at his Sampson Trace, Cunupia home around 7.30 pm, when three men, one armed with a gun, entered and announced a holdup. The men robbed the family of cash, cellphones and other valuables before escaping.
The Cunupia police station was contacted and shortly after, officers led by Snr Supt Johnny Abraham intercepted a white Nissan B-15 with the men, three from Prizgar Lands, Laventille, and one from Tobago.The men were arrested and a .38 revolver was recovered. Officers said yesterday that the men will be placed on identification parades for other robberies which occurred in the area.
