by

The recent award of knighthoods to three prominent Antiguan cricketers who have served West Indies cricket with distinction has been widely commended throughout the region. This brings the number of West Indian cricketers who have been knighted to 11. They are Andy Roberts, Clyde Walcott, Conrad Hunte, Curtly Ambrose, Everton Weekes, Frank Worrell, Garry Sobers, Learie Constantine, Richie Richardson, Vivian Richards, and Wes Hall.

The knighthoods awarded to Richards, Richardson, Roberts and Ambrose are Antiguan knighthoods, as part of that country's national awards system. Others received knighthoods from Queen Elizabeth II as part of awards made on the advice of the relevant Commonwealth Caribbean prime ministers.

In 1999, Sir Vivian Richards was the first person to receive his country's highest national award, namely the Most Exalted Order of the National Hero, which is an Order of Knighthood. In 2014, Messrs Roberts, Ambrose and Richardson received their country's second highest award, the Most Distinguished Order of the Nation, also an Order of Knighthood.
