The difficulty I've experienced on a few occasions when parents have asked me for some direction to professional help for their children is one where parents select pathology first for their children's conduct before considering the effects of the home environment and the attending lifestyle. That lifestyle many times is one devoid of or "soft" on discipline. In a few instances, out of curiosity I'd ask parents about their child's lifestyle only to discover that the child's first "mental health" issue has been the one where parents, not cued into the importance of discipline, allow children to live without order sufficiently long to not be able to "bend" their will.
The discipline to which I refer is the factor that can help children develop self-control, and involves the appropriate guidance to have them function socially correct in the home, at play and in the school environment. It's what would also inform children's later conduct at work, in relationships and in raising their own children. Discipline here does not mean punishment or conflict between parent and child, though those aspects may be a part of the process.
