West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin may be able to play for his team in their all important International Cricket Council (ICC) World T20 clash against Australia tomorrow at the Sher-e-Bangla national stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh.
Ramdin injured the right thumb on his right hand while keeping up to the wicket off the bowling of Jamaican left arm seamer Krishmar Santokie. The left-hander pushed one wide and Ramdin went after it and damaged his finger. He left the field before the game ended and was replaced by Lendl Simmons behind the stumps.
Yesterday, he did an x-ray on the thumb and it was revealed that there was no fracture, which would have sent him home early from the tournament. However, there is still pain and swelling and he has started receiving treatment for it. He will continue to receive treatment today and a decision will be made before the match starts here tomorrow night on whether or not he plays.
If Ramdin cannot beat the fitness clock then opener Johnson Charles who has kept wickets before in international T20 cricket for the West Indies, will come on for his first match of the tournament.
Meanwhile, the players all took it easy yesterday lazing around the Ruposhi Bangla Hotel, as they were given the day off like most of Bangladesh as they celebrated their Independence from Pakistan.
Today, it's back to action, as they will train at the Dhaka Academy from 9.30 am. Ramdin is expected to play no part on the training session as he continues to recover from his thumb injury.
The West Indies will focus today on their fielding which has been below standard this tour. They need to be firing on all pistons if they are to defeat the Australians and more or less knock them out of the tournament.
West Indies will be looking for a win, as a loss could also spell the end for them. The Caribbean boys have won one and loss one match so far. Their loss came against India in their opening match and they rebounded beautifully on Tuesday to take care of hosts Bangladesh.
