Young adults interested in learning traditional mas-making skills are invited to sign up for Jouvay Ayiti's 2014 Mango Season Mas programme.The Mango Season Mas programme targets 18 to 25 year olds, and will offer 120 contact hours of instruction and practice in four traditional mas-making skills at two locations, Studio 66 in Barataria and Curepe Scherzando Steelband in Curepe.A release from Jouvay Ayiti said the programme, which is quite intensive, will run from June 16 to 26, Monday to Friday from 5 pm to 8.30 pm, with the occasional weekend workshop to fulfil its practicum component.
The elements of the mas-making programme are:
Cardboard-sculpting fundamentals: an introduction to the handling, use and possibilities for cardboard in mas making
Bamboo-sculpting fundamentals: an introduction to the use of bamboo in creating effigies and mas structures
Wire-bending fundamentals: an introduction to the handling, use and application of wire in creating mas
Papier m�ch� fundamentals: an introduction to the use of paper in decorating and creating mas structures and frames
Arts business essentials: basic marketing, accounting, funding, proposal and report writing for the would-be mas maker
These courses will be taught by some of the leading artists in the industry.There are only 25 spaces available for the programme.
