At­tor­ney Gen­er­al Anand Ram­lo­gan and his wife Nali­ni nar­row­ly es­caped death last night, af­ter the ve­hi­cle in which they were be­ing tak­en to a cock­tail re­cep­tion at the South­ern Acad­e­my for the Per­form­ing Arts col­lid­ed with an­oth­er ve­hi­cle at the in­ter­sec­tion of the Rien­zi Kir­ton High­way and Todd's Street, San Fer­nan­do.

The ac­ci­dent left Spe­cial Branch of­fi­cer Cpl Ra­sool, who was pro­vid­ing se­cu­ri­ty for the AG, in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion at the San Fer­nan­do Gen­er­al Hos­pi­tal.The dri­vers of the two ve­hi­cles, the AG's black Toy­ota Pra­do and Adriel Gookool, who was dri­ving a pick-up, were not in­jured.

Around 8 pm, po­lice and fire­fight­ers who were await­ing the ar­rival of Prime Min­is­ter Kam­la Per­sad-Bisses­sar, who host­ed the re­cep­tion for the VI­II Amer­i­c­as Com­pet­i­tive­ness Fo­rum 2014 del­e­gates at SAPA, rushed help the oc­cu­pants of the AG's SUV af­ter it turned on its right side in the crash.

They climbed atop the ve­hi­cle and pulled out the AG and his wife, who was car­ried by a po­lice­man to an­oth­er ve­hi­cle. The Ram­lo­gans were then tak­en in­to SAPA where a doc­tor checked them, In­sp Mul­raine told the T&T Guardian.The AG lat­er came back out­side as Ra­sool was be­ing placed in the am­bu­lance. He was ac­com­pa­nied by Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty Min­is­ter Gary Grif­fith and Na­tion­al Di­ver­si­ty Min­is­ter Dr Rodger Samuel.

Asked if he was okay, the AG told the Guardian, "I am a bit shak­en, but I am all right."
