A 50-year-old san­i­ta­tion work­er has died af­ter be­ing crushed un­der the garbage truck he was work­ing on in D'Abadie. Ac­cord­ing to re­ports around 6.15 am on Mon­day, Rana Bridge­lal, of Or­ange Grove, Tacarigua, was stand­ing at the back of truck along Reid Lane in D'Abadie when he slipped while jump­ing off to col­lect a res­i­dent's garbage.

Bridge­lal re­port­ed fell on his back. In­ves­ti­ga­tors said the dri­ver of the truck, who did not see the fall, then re­versed over Bridge­lal, ac­ci­den­tal­ly crush­ing him. The dri­ver told po­lice he did not hear Bridge­lal's screams for help, over the noise of the garbage com­pacter of the truck.

Bridge­lal was pro­nounced dead on the scene by a dis­trict med­ical of­fi­cer. Ari­ma po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing. The road fa­tal­i­ty toll now stands at 13 for the year. Ac­cord­ing to sta­tis­tics re­leased by the Po­lice Ser­vice's Crime and Prob­lem Analy­sis Branch (CA­PA) there were 188 road fa­tal­i­ties in 2012.
