A Beetham Estate teenager who was charged with possession of a gun, ammunition and marijuana on Carnival Monday was denied bail and remanded to the Youth Training Centre until tomorrow.The 17-year-old Servol student of Main Street, Beetham Gardens, was refused bail when he reappeared before Magistrate Melvin Daniel in the Port-of-Spain Fourth Court on Friday.
Daniel said he needed time to reflect on the case presented to the court and would rule tomorrow.The teenager was arrested on February 11 at First Street, Beetham Gardens, after he was found with a gun, 14 rounds of ammunition and 54 grammes of marijuana.Appearing before Chief Magistrate Marcia Ayers-Caesar in the Port-of-Spain Eighth Court on Wednesday, the teenager was remanded in the absence of a tracing.
Appealing for reasonable bail, attorney Patrick Godson-Phillip became upset after Sgt Stanley Joseph objected to bail and labelled the teenager a misguided youth who had a record and was "beyond the control of his parents."Insisting that Joseph afford the teen's parents the respect they deserve after they came to court and stood alongside their son, Godson-Phillip told the magistrate that the teenager was not a flight risk and would attend court as ordered.
Meanwhile, Omarro Felix, 33, of Laventille Road, Febeau Village, San Juan, will reappear in court today, after Joseph objected to him being granted bail when police officers were unable to establish an exact address for him.Felix, a taxi driver was arrested on February 12 at Second Street, San Juan, after he was found with a gun, 11 rounds of ammunition and a quantity of marijuana. He also appeared before Daniel on Friday.
Appealing for bail, Felix's attorney Richard Clarke-Wills sought to reassure the court that Felix had a fixed place of abode, despite three addresses at San Juan, La Horquetta and Arima.Ordering that Felix's mother attend court today to confirm his story that he often stays at her house, Daniel requested officers to revisit his mother Janet Alexander and ensure her appearance in court.
