Sgt Manwaring was honourable in service to country. The T&T Police Service and indeed the entire country must have skipped a few heartbeats on Tuesday night when Sgt Hyden Manwaring succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained in the line of duty when he tried to apprehend a robbery suspect in San Fernando.
As glowing tributes continue to pour in, one must realise that Sgt Manwaring was an extraordinary citizen, full of zest for life, family and a relentless passion to boldly go after the criminal elements.
The increasing attacks on citizens and their businesses must surely be wake-up calls that crime is spiralling out of control and needs to be taken as seriously. One of the voices showering praise on Sgt Manwaring's 18 years of service, Minister of National Security Jack Warner again emphasised the urgency of all nationals to rally in full support in the fight against crime.
Despite the negatives thrown at them in execution of their duties, as true guardians for all citizens' safety, these brave men and women in the protective services have continued to make inroads in crime.
Mr Warner's resolve to build a hospital and welfare support for wounded and killed members of the protective services must be welcome news to families of these officers. We must never forget the gallant efforts of these brave officers but build on their achievements to foster courage and confidence in making communities safer for our families.
