Although the cheques came three months late, heads of the churches were grateful, admitting they thought they had been forgotten. However, only 24 representatives turned up to collect the cheques from Public Utilities Minister and MP Nazim Baksh at his constituency office, Cedar Hill, Princes Town. Each cheque was valued at $5,000.
Delivering brief remarks at the simple distribution ceremony, Baksh encouraged the church leaders to continue doing good work in the communities.Informing them about various social grants and assistance available to deserving citizens, he urged them to educate others who might not be aware of them.
In instances where grants provide materials to help people repair and build their homes, Baksh said the churches could assist by mobilising labour. He encouraged the church leaders to continue to make a concerted effort to improve communities and the lives of residents.
