Champion of the inaugural National Mountain Bike Championship winner Jason Costelloe added another title to his career when he captured the Open Division trophy at the Mike's Bike MTB Revolution, which was held at Chaguaramas on Saturday.
Costelloe finished in 1:19:27, considerably ahead of his nearest challenger Rishi Ramlalack, who kept within distance from the champion until the second half of the race. The race consisted of four laps, which had Costelloe and Ramlalack at the front of the pack exchanging leads within the first two. However, by the third, Costelloe pulled away for a lead which he maintained until the end. Ramlalack finished just under four and a half minutes behind in 1:23:52.
Finishing third was 13-year-old Peter Sellier, who outpaced riders many years his senior, in 1:26:37. There was little surprise as the reigning women's national mountain bike champion Maria Gooding took the crown in the Women's Open Category, a three-lap race, in 1:16:22, ahead of Antigua and Barbuda road cycling champion Tamiko Buttler, who finished four minutes behind. The Sport Category was a shorter course, but perhaps the toughest course for the division yet. It consisted of two laps for men aged 17 years and over, and one lap for men between 13 and 16 years, as well as one lap for all women. The overall winners in Sport (men) were Greg Downes with a time of 48 minutes and 17 seconds, followed by Keive Wilson and Anthony Shaw. The top three women were Tiffany Abraham (first), Miranda Morton-Gittens (second) and Carolina Lucio (third).
Children 12 years and under raced a shorter course, and the fastest time for this course was 10 minutes and 40 seconds by Jesse Hospedales who placed first in Boys 9-10.
