Powergen captain Gregory Mahabir blasted an even hundred yesterday to guide the leaders of the National Cricket League Premier Division into a strong position against Comets at the end of day one at Syne Village, Penal.
Batting first, Mahabir struck eleven fours in his 132 ball knock to single handedly take Powergen to 207 in their first innings. National batsman Evin Lewis pitched in with 29. The best bowlers for Comets were Richard Kelly (4/55) and Ancil Bhagan (4/60), grabbing four wickets apiece.
By the close of play, Comets were struggling on 97/7, still 110 runs behind. Spin bowler Kavesh Kantasingh was the pick of the bowlers, snatching 3/43. V. Maharaj's unbeaten 28 and Kieran Joseph's 19 offered some resistance for Comets.
Next door at the Wilson Road Recreation Ground, third place Clarke Road are keeping the pressure on leaders Powergen. Batting first, Clarke Road posted 257/8 declared behind 64 from guyanese Ryan Ramdass. Shazan Babwah and national batsman Nicholas Pooran both contributed 39 to the total. Deon Ferrier (2/49) took two wickets for Aranguez.
In reply, Aranguez were 50/4 at stumps. Jonathan Cabralis scored 16, while Clevon Kallawan took 2/13 to leave Aranguez with alot of work to do to stay alive.
