Jones leads Connection in Champions League

T&T de­fend­er Jo­evin Jones will cap­tain a 27-man Di­recTV W Con­nec­tion squad which will con­test the 2013/2014 Con­ca­caf Cham­pi­ons League, be­gin­ning on Thurs­day with a clash again­srt Arabe Unido of Pana­ma.

The se­lec­tion was made by head coach and tech­ni­cal di­rec­tor Stu­art Charles Fevri­er, who fell just short of the alot­ted 30 play­ers leav­ing room for three ad­di­tions as the com­pe­ti­tion pro­gress­es.

The Savonet­ta Boys will open its ac­count agast Arabe Unido on Thurs­day at the Rom­mel Fer­nan­dez Sta­di­um, Pana­ma City.

Jones, who was one of the top play­ers in T&T's suc­cess­ful chal­lenge of the Con­ca­caf Gold Cup last month leads a W Con­nec­tion team which boasts six new for­eign sign­ings in­clud­ing the likes of 24-year-old for­mer Ital­ian youth in­ter­na­tion­al strik­er Mirko Delia, 21-year-old full back Joao Ana­nias Jor­dao Jr, 25-year-old mid­field­er Ce­lio Duil­herme Da Sil­va San­tos (both of Brazil) and three Colom­bians: 21-year-old mid­field­ers Yhon Reyes Lopez and Yefer Lozano Ru­biano, and 23-year-old strik­er Cami­lo Or­te­ga Di­az.

Al­so in­clud­ed are young­sters Neil Ben­jamin and Jo­mal "Bee­bo" Williams who were omit­ted from last year's Cham­pi­ons League cam­paign due to na­tion­al du­ties with the T&T men's Un­der-20 team.

While on tour, the team played sev­er­al train­ing match­es in its prepa­ra­tion for the Cham­pi­ons League. Play­ing against Club Amer­i­ca, Con­nec­tion was de­feat­ed 2-0, be­fore the team se­cured a win 4-2 over FC Or­so­mar­so. Ben­jamin, Williams, Jer­rel Brit­t­lo and Sil­vio were on tar­get.

W Con­nec­tion al­so won 5-0 win over De­porti­vo Cor­do­ba with goals by the cap­tain Jones, Da Sil­va, Ben­jamin, Kurt Fred­er­ick and An­drei Pacheco. In its fi­nal train­ing match against FC Flori­da, on Sun­day, W Con­nec­tion was de­feat­ed 2-1 with the lone goal scored by Mekeil Williams.

The team will fly di­rect­ly from Cali, Colom­bia to Pana­ma, to­day.
