Keyla Snowden, a former University of Kentucky basketball standout of T&T parentage recently returned to her roots when she judged on a panel at the All-Star fixture in the recently concluded exhibition tour between T&T's schools' basketball standouts and the visiting Top Achievers Foundation (TAF), from Texas, USA.She arrived on the same flight TAF team on August 1 and also toured Tobago with the Texas team. Keyla, who graduated from UK with a degree in communications, performed in a mentoring role for both the TAF boys' Under-17 team and the T&T Schools Basketball Association (TTSBA) All-Star teams.
A native of Lexington, Kentucky, Snowden is the daughter of Sharadon Bartholomew Jack who is originally from Belmont, Trinidad. Whilst on tour, Snowden met with several officials from the Ministry of Sport and TTSBA regarding a future role in the development of basketball throughout the twin islands. Snowden has stated her intentions of returning to T&T to explore possible available opportunities.At school level, Snowden was an All-State guard at Lexington Catholic High School where she won two Kentucky State Championships and was named Sweet Sixteen MVP in 2006. She led Lexington Catholic to a 130-14 record over her four-year career and three consecutive state title game appearances. For her career, she totaled 1,908 career points while setting state records for single-season free throw percentage (91.0 per cent as a senior) and career free throw percentage (84.7 per cent).
At college as a junior, she started in 18 matches including the last seven of the season. She played her best in Kentucky's biggest games, which included five 3-pointers and 17 points in a win over number 12 Notre Dame and a team-high 15 points against number three Duke. She was named SEC Player of the Week in December, 2010, after scoring a career-high 28 points in only 19 minutes against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.During her senior season, Snowden was third on the team in scoring as Kentucky spent most of the year ranked among the nation's Top Ten. She led UK to the school's first SEC Championship in three decades and another Elite Eight appearance in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Her honors included being named the SEC Co-6 title for all of UK Athletics for the 2011-12 school year.
Following the All-Star game on August 9, Snowden socialised with members of both teams before attending a practice game between T&T Senior Women Netball team against their junior counterparts.Organizers of the recently concluded tour said, hopefully, with such excellent all-round achievements, Snowden will be able at some stage to make a valuable contribution to not only basketball but more so the social development of T&T young athletes.
