DirecTV W Connection midfielder Joevin Jones is set to join Italian Serie A club Udinese for a 12-day trial in December. The 22 year-old T&T international has gained interests from a few clubs in Europe, including France's Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and England's Leicester City, but Udinese was quickest to invite the Connection starlet on trial from December 10-22.
Udinese, captained by Italian forward Antonio Di Natale and is a former club of former Brazil star Zico, finished fifth last season, but currently sits 13th on the 20-team table after 14 league matches.Udinese, founded in 1896, is the second oldest club in Italy, after Genoa (1893).
Genoa, meanwhile, is the current club of former Connection player Zaine Pierre. The 20 year-old Pierre, a St Lucia national team midfielder, is in his second season with the Italian club.Once Jones does enough the impress Udinese head coach Francesco Guidolin, he would become only the second T&T and third W Connection player to play in Italy.Silvio Spann was the first Trinidadian to join an Italian club by signing with Serie A outfit AC Perugia during the 2001-2002 season from Connection, but only featured on loan for Serie C club SS Sambenedettese Calcio the following season.W Connection owner/president David John Williams expressed his confidence in Jones saying, "We won't give him the opportunity if we didn't have confidence in him."
Williams believes that everything can go well for Jones, once the former Toronto FC and Colorado Rapids trialist can overcome the climate difference averaging 5 C (41 F) in December in Udine, Italy, and demonstrate his true talent.Williams is also hoping for good news later this week on forwards Jerrel Britto and Jamal Clarence and T&T senior team defender Daneil Cyrus all on trial in Vietnam.Britto and Clarence are with V-League outfit Song Lam Nghe An, while Cyrus is at Hanoi T&T FC.
W Connection head coach Stuart Charles Fevrier has done remarkably well without the trio for the Toyota Classic semi-final by defeating Guaya United 3-0 on November 23, and then lifted the title following Saturday's Final with a 2-0 win over Club Sando.Connection, just as other Pro League clubs, is anxious for the transfer window which runs between December 26 and January 24, and Fevrier will be delighted to have the services of striker Shahdon Winchester, who has returned to Trinidad following a one year loan move to Finland's FF Jaro.W Connection presently leads the Digicel Pro League standings by six points, with maximum 15 points from 5 matches and will meet rival Central FC from 5pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Round One Match Day Seven. But the "Savonnetta Boys" must first tackle Guaya United a second time this season in the quarterfinal round of the FA Trophy from 3.30 pm at the La Savanne Recreation Ground, Guayaguayare.
