Three nationals of the Dominican Republic were found guilty yesterday of soliciting for the purpose of prostitution. Susana Mendez Lebron, 34, Juana Mercedes Ramirez Evans, 38, and Patricia Sandoval Orejuela, 42, each were placed on $1,000 bonds to keep the peace for three years. The women appeared before San Fernando Magistrate Alicia Chankar. All three, who were represented by attorney Subhas Panday, denied being prostitutes. They were arrested at the Tokyo Hotel and Bar, San Fernando.
Panday had contended there was a conflict in the philosophy of the court, since licences were being granted for the opening of brothels under the "guise" of hotels. He said brothels charge by the hour. "Hotels do not do that," he pointed out. During the trial, prosecutor Sgt Russel Ramoutar called the arresting officer, Sgt Allister Gervero, to the witness stand. Gervero told the court at around 3 pm last August 30, he noticed the women were approaching male patrons entering the hotel and bar and offering themselves for money in the sums of $250, $300 and $250 respectively. The women testified through a Spanish interpreter.
Lebron claimed she had gone to the Trinizuela School to register her son and then went to the bar to collect $200 from a female worker to whom she had sold some cosmetics. Lebron said she lived at Longdenville and was married with two children. Evans admitted to giving the police a false address when arrested. She said she was afraid. She said has been living in Trinidad for the past 16 years and was meeting a male friend for a casual drink of "beers" when she was arrested.
