Any­one found with glass bot­tles from Car­ni­val Fri­day to Car­ni­val Tues­day in Port-of-Spain will be fined $1,000 and three months im­pris­on­ment. A res­o­lu­tion to pro­hib­it the use and sale of glass bot­tles dur­ing Car­ni­val Fri­day to Car­ni­val Tues­day has been ap­proved. This was an­nounced at the month­ly statu­to­ry meet­ing of the Port-of-Spain City Cor­po­ra­tion, City Hall yes­ter­day. Deputy may­or Keron Valen­tine read the res­o­lu­tion which was ap­proved at a spe­cial meet­ing of Down­town Car­ni­val Com­mit­tee ear­li­er this week. Peo­ple's Part­ner­ship coun­cil­lors Keisha Arm­strong and Robin By­noe vot­ed against it.

Port-of-Spain may­or Louis Lee Sing said not con­sum­ing drinks in glass bot­tles was not pe­cu­liar to T&T. He said the cor­po­ra­tion met and con­sult­ed with man­u­fac­tur­ers, mas bands, po­lice and all rel­e­vant par­ties to dis­cuss the mat­ter. Lee Sing said last year the on­ly mur­der was be­cause of a per­pe­tra­tor who broke a bot­tle and stabbed an­oth­er per­son to death.

He said the is­sue of no glass bot­tles was "re­al." Lee Sing said the res­o­lu­tion was adopt­ed as a mea­sure of con­trol against vi­o­lence. "We have lost too many lives at the ex­pense of vi­o­lence in fetes," he added. (RKR)
