With one round to go today in the preliminary rounds of the 2012 Sunday League series, a keen battle is on for quarter-final spots in Group B. Two spots in Group A have already been decided with defending champions QPCC and PowerGen going through. Queen's Park have won all their four matches to date and sit atop the standings with 12 points. PowerGen, on the other hand, is also unbeaten but has three wins and an unfortunate washout. They have ten points, but the real battle will be among SIS Central Sports (four points), First Citizens Clarke Road (four points) and newcomers Esmeralda (three points). Central Sports will be favourites to land a spot because they come up against winless Wanderers. The big clash will be at Wilson Road in Penal, when Clarke Road opposes Esmeralda.
Group B is still wide open. Three teams T&TEC, Comets and Merryboys all have three points. Bamboo is in fourth place with six points. Merryboys president Patrick Rampersad says his team needs a win badly. "We are really looking forward to this game because if we win, we will be group winners and this would put us in a good position. "It would mean that we play the 4th place finisher from the next group in the quarters on Sunday and this would be an easier game for us." Rampersad said his boys would not be under-estimating Bamboo in this clash. "We are not going to under-estimate them, we are playing good cricket and I have absolute confidence in this team. "The coach has gotten the guys to play together and when they are doing this, they are very dangerous indeed." Today, Comets play T&TEC in a top of the table clash. Merryboys will come up Bamboo and the four quarter-finalists will come from these two clashes.
