Six thousand children from 69 schools in Port-of-Spain and environs came out to make a statement against injustice, for the ninth annual walk against crime held yesterday at the Queen's Park Savannah. With a reputation for the biggest walk against crime in the country, it provided the children with the opportunity to show their concern for the crime wave in T&T.
Speaking at the end of the event, sports personality Kelvin Nancoo said: "The walk is the only way that the children of the Port-of-Spain region could show their reactivity, so the public can know how they feel about crime. They had placards, singing and chanting and that is the most important thing for the children socially.
"This event is part of the curriculum and it was a learning experience for them to interact with others. The walk against crime is a very important message to children all over Trinidad." Nancoo added that the expected outcome was for the children to understand that through sport and culture, positive things can be done.
Reigning Calypso Monarch Duane O'Connor and Sportsman Of The Year Roger Daniel led the walk. The role model celebrities were joined by school supervisors Patricia Waldron Adams, Taliba Ayodike, Jenny-Lynne Cyrille, Zhada Baboolal and Rose Bereaux, along with other Ministry of Education officials.
British Petroleum, bmobile, Crimestoppers Incorporated, PTSC and Blue Waters were the main sponsors of the event.
