Defence Force began its defence of the North Zone Basketball Commission First Division League, with a 140-36 blowout of Macoya Forum, at the Jean Pierre Complex, on Saturday night. Brendan Charles and point guard Derrick Boxill netted 23 and 17 points, respectively for the humbling win over Forum. After recording a 65-49 win over Straker Nets, only 48 hours prior, Macoya Forum could not repeat the same strong defensive performance, which was demonstrated in its good start to the season.
The match followed a Second Division fixture, with the University of the West Indies (UWI) taking the slightest of wins, 55-54, over Mt Hope Spurs. Mt Hope Spurs led 35-31 at the half, but a Dherron Sandy-inspired UWI team rebounded in thesecond half to pip its way to a first win in its first match of the season. Sandy led the way with 16 points for his team. A day later San Juan Warriors rebounded from its opening-day loss, to defeat Straker Nets 79-70. Korey Leehood made the difference, with an outstanding display of 28 points. The opening Under-16 fixture at the Maloney Indoor facility, between Off-limits and Pistons, saw Off-limits come away with a blowout, 83-45 victory. The highlight, however, was the masterclass performance from Shakeel Dyte, who managed an incredible tally of 56 points leading Off-limits to what looked to be the start of a successful campaign.
