East Indian singers Usuff Khan, Sundar Popo, KB Singh, Isaac Yankaran, Lakhan Kareeya, Sam Boodram, Rakesh Yankaran, Rasika Dindial, Sohan Gildharie, Jameer Hosein, Rikki Jai, Sonny Mann and Basdeo Lappo will be saluted through impersonation at the annual Mere Desh celebrations. Mere Desh committee co-ordinator Ajeet Praimsingh said those entering the competition would have "to sing alike, dress alike and act alike." The 22nd annual celebrations will be held on Indian Arrival Day, at Mid-Centre Mall carpark in Chaguanas. Mayor of Chaguanas Orlando Nagessar will deliver the feature address. "This project is to bring back to all, especially our young people, to understand and appreciate the role and contribution these artistes have made to our country, especially as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Independence of Trinidad and Tobago," Praimsingh said.
Invitations to our schoolchildren are endorsed for them to appreciate the cultural and religious diversity of Trinidad and Tobago. "Our programme is designed so that our social researchers and cultural lovers would be able to look at the approach we have taken to celebrate Indian Arrival Day," Praimsingh added. Modern Rhythms led by Rawtee Ramroop, members of Priya Dance Group, Desh Premee Dance Group, Shi Shankar Dance Company and tassa-drummers will provide entertainment. The Lions Club of Chaguanas will provide free medical check-ups.
