Proscenium Theatre Company, the producers of the Broadway musical production Rent, will present Little Shops of Horror at Queen's Hall in St Ann's, Port-of-Spain, from June 9-17. The Tony award production comes complete with 100 per cent live music with the band Checklist. Proceeds from the production will go toward the charity, Lifeline. Little Shop of Horrors is based on a 1960 black comedy film by director Roger Corman. The musical by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman featured music in the vein of early rock and roll, doo-wop, and early Motown. Little Shop of Horrors mixes rock and R&B music with a campy and macabre script.
It is the story of Seymour Krelborn (played by Marvin Dowridge), a lowly, never-do-well assistant in a failing flower shop on skid row. His boss, Mr Mushnik (played by Keino Swamber) has just announced to him and his blonde, beautiful co-worker Audrey (played by Aurora Tardieu) that the shop will be closed due to bad business. It is then that Seymour tells his co-workers about a strange new plant that he found and has been nursing back to health. Some type of Venus Fly-Trap, Seymour suggested that this exotic plant may just attract more business.
