Archbishop Joseph Harris hopes the construction of a new Point Cumana RC primary school can begin by the end of the year and stands firm that the students deserve their own school. Last month Education Minister Tim Gopeesingh decided to integrate the Pt Cumana Government School with the RC school. The decision was taken because the RC school was so dilapidated it was believed to pose a danger and had to be closed. Harris, who spoke with the T&T Guardian on Wednesday in a telephone interview, said the students would remain at St Peter's RC Church, Carenage, until the new school was built. "The school is being rebuilt. The architects have to send us the plans but first they have to draw the plans and we will see if the school fits the area we have," he added. He said rebuilding the school would take some time but until then, "the children will remain where they are." A senior staff member at the school, who asked not to be named, said he expected the process to start sometime in November. He also shared Harris' view that the children should stay where they were, adding the staff and students feel "safe and comfortable."
