Former Express crime reporter, Akile Simon was remanded in custody and denied bail for a second consecutive time when he reappeared in court yesterday. Simon, 29, is before the Tunapuna Magistrates Court, jointly charged with gardener Rodney Cave, 28, for arms and ammunition.
The two were arrested on July 8, at an apartment at the corner of Meade and Henry Streets, Tunapuna, after police executed a search warrant. Simon was charged with possession of a .38 firearm and 13 rounds of .38 ammunition while Cave was charged for possession of five 12-gauge cartridges.
When the men appeared before Senior Magistrate Gail Gonzales on July 10, Simon was denied bail on the basis that he had allegedly committed the offences while out on bail. His co-accused was granted $50,000 bail and has since been released. Reappearing before Magistrate Anna Ryan in the Tunapuna First Magistrates Court yesterday, Simon was unrepresented as his attorney, Keith Scotland was absent when the matter was called.
A second bail application, by an attorney who held for Scotland, was rejected on the basis that Simon had similar matters pending before the court and had been released on bail when he allegedly committed the offences in Tunapuna. Cave also reappeared and was ordered to continue reporting to the police.
The two were charged by PC Antonio Perreira of the Tunapuna police. Simon will reappear on August 28 and Cave on October 11. Simon will reappear in the Arima Magistrates Court on August 9, jointly charged with three others for a series of offences relating to a robbery at the K&A Liquor Mart in Arouca, on May 20.
